Emergency First Aid in Rugby Union – Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work

Rugby First Aid Training for Grassroots Clubs

Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) with Rugby-Specific Content

Since August 2025, the RFU has no longer provided the Emergency First Aid in Rugby Union (EFARU) course. However, Elite Training Solutions (ETS) continues to support grassroots rugby clubs by offering a reduced-price Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work course, with additional digital resources made available to learners through the RFU.

ETS remains on the RFU list of providers and has extensive experience supporting rugby clubs and volunteers with practical first aid training.

ETS was previously an RFU-approved Educator for over six years, delivering both Emergency First Aid in Rugby Union (EFARU) and Play It Safe (PIS) safeguarding courses. ETS also supported internal quality assurance (IQA) processes, helping RFU First Aid Trainers across Area 4 (East Midlands) maintain the required standards.

We understand that finding affordable, accessible and high-quality first aid training for grassroots rugby clubs can be challenging. Our aim is to continue supporting clubs, coaches, volunteers and match officials with relevant first aid training that helps keep players and volunteers safe.

Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work for Rugby Clubs

The Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work course provides a recognised minimum level of first aid training for appointed workplace first aiders and can be adapted to include rugby-specific considerations for volunteers providing pitch-side first aid.

The course is particularly suitable for:

  • Rugby club first aiders
  • Coaches and coaching staff
  • Team managers
  • Match officials
  • Club volunteers
  • Pitch-side first aiders
  • Individuals responsible for first aid at rugby training and matches

Learners develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required to assess an incident, recognise signs and symptoms, and provide appropriate first aid for life-threatening conditions, injuries and illness.

The rugby-specific elements focus on situations that may occur during rugby training sessions and matches, helping volunteers understand how to respond safely and effectively in a pitch-side environment.

Recommended Candidate Prerequisites

Candidates are recommended to have:

  • A relevant RFU Headcase Certificate for the area in which they will be working.
  • Proof of completion of the relevant RFU e-learning module, including certificate evidence.

Clubs are advised to retain copies of these records, and candidates should also add the relevant qualifications and evidence to their RFU GMS profile where applicable.

Supporting Grassroots Rugby Clubs

We understand the importance of grassroots rugby and the vital role played by volunteers in keeping clubs operating.

That’s why ETS is offering this reduced-price Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work course to help rugby clubs maintain appropriate first aid provision without placing unnecessary financial pressure on volunteers and club committees.

In addition to rugby first aid training, we can also support clubs with a range of online training and first aid equipment.

Other Training Available

  • Allergy Awareness – Online
  • Level 2 Food Safety – Online
  • Level 2 Fire Safety – Online

We also supply first aid equipment at discounted prices to help rugby clubs maintain their first aid kits and emergency equipment.

Please contact us if you would like a copy of our current first aid equipment catalogue.

After the Course

Following successful completion, candidates will receive their digital certification by email.

It is recommended that clubs ask appointed first aiders to self-certify their first aid qualification on their RFU GMS profile, using the self-service tool within the qualifications section. This can help clubs monitor qualified first aiders and their qualification renewal dates.

Once ETS has issued certification, we do not have access to individual candidate GMS accounts and therefore cannot advise on the specific GMS process.

Any queries relating to RFU GMS, qualification records or the GMS self-service system should be directed to the RFU.
